In 2009 our founder, Rachel McLain, spent 3 months doing research in Uganda at Uganda Christian University to complete her Masters in Public Health. This is where she met and friended Daniel Tulibagenyi. Daniel founded a civic public health organization on campus called MICAH. They take students into villages around Uganda for 10 weeks every semester to implement ongoing public health programs. Rachel began working with Daniel to improve the already established programs and became fast friends.
Throughout her time in Uganda she saw poverty and sickness that changed her forever. She began to wonder if she could even make a difference in the vastness of problems that face Ugandans. Then Daniel and other Ugandans began to show her how one person can make a difference.
When she returned to the US God laid it on her heart to start an organization that would practice sustainable development and change the face of Uganda one person and one village at a time.
In January 2010 through prayer and fasting Son Shines Hope was birthed. Rachel spent over a year researching and preparing to get this organization off the ground. Finally in April of 2011 we formally began ongoing projects in Uganda.
In July of 2011 she packed up and moved to Uganda where her and Daniel were engaged and are currently in the process of adopting a son, John. (His story can be found in our blog section of this website).
Son Shines Hope exists to transform the lives of those in poverty by providing excellent and sustainable community services in developing countries.
We will do this by providing access to basic public health resources and programs through practicing sustainable development, Christ centered leadership and partnership with both beneficiaries and donors to show the love of Jesus through development of people groups and communities.
But if anyone has this world’s goods (resources for sustaining life) and sees his brother and fellow believer in need, yet closes his heart of compassion against him, how can the love of God live and remain in him? 1 John 3: 17 Amplified Bible
